January OST Champion: Matthew LeClaire

Matt’s journey to leading Timber Trail BASE in Castle Rock is a story of purpose, passion, and resilience. Starting as a program aide in Aurora Public Schools in 2006, Matt worked his way up in the field, took time to explore other career avenues, and ultimately realized that working with kids was what he was meant to do. In December 2020, during the challenges of the pandemic, Matt stepped into the role of manager at Timber Trail BASE and brought his enthusiasm and creativity to a program that has since grown in enrollment over the last three years. His approach centers on building excitement and trust with the students, creating an environment where every child feels valued and respected.

Matt believes in letting kids be themselves and showing them respect no matter who they are. A story that exemplifies this is of a first grader who found the courage to wear nail polish and express himself, supported by Matt and the community at Timber Trail. When another student teased him, everyone came together to reinforce the program’s message: "Be happy, be you." These moments, where kids feel free to embrace who they are, are what make Timber Trail BASE a special place. For Matt, it’s not just about providing care—it’s about building connections, instilling confidence, and mentoring students in a way that helps them thrive.

The program itself is dynamic and flexible, serving students from kindergarten through fifth grade with before-school, afterschool, and full-day care. Mornings are unstructured, giving kids time to ease into their day, while afternoons include snacks, outdoor play, crafts, and even homework help. High schoolers are also part of the team, creating opportunities for peer mentorship and support. Through play and creativity, Matt and his team build strong relationships with the kids, offering a blend of fun, guidance, and leadership that complements school and home life.

For Matt, OST work is deeply personal. Growing up, he struggled with making friends and finding his place. A caring principal in his elementary school years gave him a chance to mentor younger students, sparking a lifelong desire to make a difference.

Timber Trail BASE thrives because of Matt’s energy, heart, and commitment to fostering an inclusive and exciting space for students. He has built not just a program but a community where kids feel free to explore, express themselves, and be supported in every step of their journey. As Matt puts it, “You can be who you want to be at this program, and we’ll support you every step of the way.”
