CAP’s February 2023 OST Champion: Gabriella West

Each month, CAP shines a spotlight on someone that is making a difference in the afterschool and summertime world! Nominees demonstrate outstanding work in developing, supporting, and promoting meaningful high-quality out-of-school time programs to benefit children, youth, and families across Colorado.

Congratulations to CAP’s February OST Champion, Gabriella West! West currently serves as an AmeriCorps member in the 4-H STEM AmeriCorps program in Garfield County. For the past four years, she has served the youth at Elk Creek Elementary School in New Castle, Colorado.

“Gabby is a tireless STEM champion,” AmeriCorps Program Manager Melinda Macpherson said. “She provides programming every day after school and students cannot wait to hear about upcoming sessions and classes fill up almost immediately.”

West is currently running a “Girls who STEM” club, as well as an ongoing series of fun and engaging programs, like “The Wizarding World of STEM” and “Holiday STEM”. She has also applied for and been awarded several grants to bring additional STEM resources and support to her school.

“Gabby has been an amazing AmeriCorps member for the past four years,” Macpherson said. “She always says, ‘I judge my success by the smiles on their faces.’”
