CAP’s June OST Champion: Alex Herrera

Each month, CAP shines a spotlight on someone that is making a difference in the afterschool and summertime world! Nominees demonstrate outstanding work in developing, supporting, and promoting meaningful high-quality out-of-school time programs to benefit children, youth, and families across Colorado.

Congratulations to CAP’s June OST Champion Alex Herrera! Herrera works at Rec4Kids, based in Grand Junction, and currently serves as the Manager of the afterschool program at Fruitvale Elementary. She has served the Fruitvale community for more than five years.

“Alex goes above and beyond in connecting with families and making them feel part of a community.”

– Jan Meister, Rec4Kids Elementary Program Director.

According to Meister, who nominated Herrera, her program consistently sees high attendance numbers, which is a marker for success in the world of OST programs.

During her time at Fruitvale, Herrera has successfully stepped into a leadership role, training and mentoring new managers. Her program, Meister said, serves as the model for all of Rec4Kids’ other elementary programs.

“Alex meets each new challenge with a positive and eager attitude,” Meister said. “It’s clear to anyone who meets Alex that she strives to make an impact not only in her students’ lives but also in the lives of her staff.”
